The real space for innovation is in remote diagnostics
In this interview with David Swift, Presient of Whirlpool North America in US News & Wold report, Mr. Swift mentions some of the more interesting areas I've worked on in my past five years at Whirlpool. It's an interesting read and if you are going to CES in January... stop by the booth and you might just see some of my handy work.

Not too be overly critical, but you linked to the last page of the article.
I think Whirlpool has reached a dichotomy of ideas about how the market and the segments want to handle household tasks. You have some customers that want to get the stuff done without impacting the rest of their life and then you have some that find enjoyment in parts of household activities.
So what do you do? Do you create appliances with a big green start button or one that allows you to micro-control the various temperature stages of a washing machine? Of course this problem exists outside of the appliance industry as well.
I say give them both! If they want to just hit start, the appliance will figure out the settings, or they can micro-configure it to be very specific on how they want it done.
What can I say, you saw the comments on baby boomers as well :-D Ah vindication at last :-;
